While the trend has been to move manufacturing operations off shore in an effort to stay competitive in today's world economy, Pacific Metals Stampings took a different approach.

With the assistance of Pamela Welden, Director of the Employee Training Institute at the College of the Canyons in Valencia, CA, Pacific Stamping enrolled over half their employee in three separate classes consisting of 140 hours of training over a 12 month period.

Initially, Pacfic Metal Stamping's were less than receptive to the Lean Classes. Don Schlotlfelt, Vice President of the company, said employees asked why they needed to work harder when they were already working hard.

After the second classes session, a change in the company culture started taking place. "I was dumbfounded," Scholtfelt said, "by the employees positive attitue and their excitement about the changes." As a result of the training, the thru-put average dropped from 5 weeks to a remarkable 5 days. On-time delivery improved by seventy per cent. Work in process has been reduced by forty per cent along with a 40 per cent increase in capacity.

BUSINESS PARTNER OF THE YEAR

In recognition of the the company's accomplishments, College of the Canyons President Dianne Van Hook named Pacific Metal Stampings its Business Partner Of The Year. In presenting the award, President Van Hook said "The award recognized Pacific Metal Stampings' investment in it employees and the accomplishments they received." Van Hook also noted that Pacifice Metal Stampings' investment resulted in increased productivity, improved company performance and increased business for the company.

The City of Santa Clarita followed up the College of the Canyons award with a plaque honoring Pacific Metal Stampings' achievements.
